Nigeria Sports Betting Issues

This is an exciting time for sports fans in Nigeria.  Every year Nigerian sportsmen step onto the World stage, especially in football where members of the Super Eagles can influence the top levels of the sport throughout Europe.  Not only with regard to sport, but Nigeria and the wider continent of Africa are experiencing unprecedented economic growth.  With more and more available disposable income for the purposes of entertainment, more and more Nigerian sports fans want to know the best Nigeria betting sites and this is the focus of discussion at NigerianSportsBetting.com.

Nigeria is still a developing nation and thus does not enjoy some of  the services and infrastructure that those in more developed countries enjoy.  This does not actually limit your ability as a Nigerian to enjoy online betting.  It does however lead to a discussion about the benefits of Naira sports betting.  When talking about a more developed nation, wagering in one’s native currency is usually a very good thing.  However the case of betting in Nigeria, the situation is not as simple as that and I discuss why that is the case. In addition, when investigating online sportsbooks, people often want to know if it is actually legal to do so.  In short, the answer is ‘Yes’, but I discuss the details in a page about Nigeria sports betting laws.  To further understand my review criteria and how I constructed the list of top online sportsbooks for Nigerians, please read the note to the right.

Understanding the list:

When most sports betting sites get reviewed, the reviewing site operates in a grey area.  They tend to list as many betting sites as possible and always try to include the brands that have targeted themselves to your particular market so you, the reader will be able to recognize the listed brands.  The review site will often include a phoney high grade or star rating for each site to encourage your play.  However, the review never mentions why one particular site got such a high grade, nor do they mention why one site is 5-stars, and another is 4-stars.

Other review sites operate in this way because they don’t actually care where you decide to play.  Their real goal is to list as many sites as possible and hope that you will recognize a brand, then move on to start playing.

This site reviews sports betting sites with a different philosophy.  As you can see from the list at left, several of the biggest names that target the Nigerian market are not listed.  The list only includes the most reputable sites.

Unlike other review sites, this site is not interested in listing sites with which you are familiar but have a poor reputation of winning wager cancellation or might leave your deposits at risk such as with some of the locally regulated betting sites.  Those listed are truly the best group of  online sportsbooks for the Nigerian bettor.

Our list only includes sites that have satisfied the following criteria:

If a site fails to meet all these criteria, the reviewed betting site is not included in the list.  A bookie is either worthy of your custom, or not worthy, there is no grey area.  I’ve reviewed over 30 of the biggest names in the business, including your local Nigerian betting sites.

Only one dedicated Nigerian-facing betting site can be recommended for your play.  I’m not here to list every betting site, tell you what is wrong with them from a Nigerian perspective, and then hope to trade on their brand because they advertise at Premier League football matches and you recognize their brand.

This does not make sense. If I ranked the betting sites from 1 through 30, would you then sign up with #28?  Of course not!  That’s why I keep my list very short. Only the top 8 betting sites. The lone Naira betting site is listed at the top, with the rest in alphabetical order.

Deposit & Withdraw money with your betting site from Nigeria

Key to your sportsbook experience is the manner in which you’ll be able to deposit and withdraw funds from your betting account via your chosen banking methods.

Banking from Africa provides its challenges.  Many financial platform providers steer clear from the continent and Nigeria due to a widespread problems regarding fraud.  Even so, there are still some excellent choices that you can read about if you are new to the concept of online sports betting.  Ensure that your funding method and sportsbook account are in the same currency.

Serious Bettors in Nigeria get the best odds through odds comparison

If you are a serious sports bettor and you are big into combination wagers or system bets, you might want to look into comparing odds with a service like oddsjet.com.  Your potential payouts for these types of bets can differ significantly between reputable betting sites.  Comparing odds let’s you be sure you do not leave potential winnings on the table.

Most online sportsbooks are focused on targeting the average bettor.  As such, there are limits placed the amount that can be bet or that can be won.  Smaller companies are at a higher risk of a big loss, and thus they tend to have lower limits.

However, VIPs often have a desire to wager larger amounts on a given match. If you feel you belong in the VIP category of bettors, you should read about the sites that offer the highest betting limits to ensure the sportsbook you choose can take your action.

Information about new entrants into the Nigerian sports betting market

Nigeria is certainly an emerging market.  As such, certain parties are interested in becoming the local choice toward becoming Nigeria’s favourite betting brand.  Unfortunately, many of these companies are a risky choice for you, their potential customer.  If you have a looked at their rules sections, you will see a very long list of reasons that they may cancel your bet with them.  Like it or not, corruption and dishonesty is something that you need to be aware of.  When it comes to the sports betting business, ‘small’ and ‘new’ equals a bad choice for a betting partner.

On the contrary, all of the companies that have been listed above have been in business for a very long time, in some cases nearly 100 years.  They have based their business on trust and they are all solvent enough to ensure that they always pay out in a timely fashion to their customers and never look for ways to cancel a bet.  Although some of the new entrants to the Nigerian market try to offer betting accounts in the Naira to tempt your play with them, a quick analysis shows why many Naira betting sites do not actually make economic sense for you because of the fees that have been attached to their usage.
